Set in New York’s Russian immigrant community, Downtown Express uses music to explore how old world values clash in a new country. New Jersey director David Grubin recruited accomplished musicians for key roles. Philippe Quint, a Grammy-nominated violinist, plays a young Russian on a scholarship to Juilliard. When he falls in love with a downtown singer/songwriter (played by recording artist Nellie McKay), he must decide whether to break with his father and forge his own destiny.
