Middle School Workshops

Intro to Improv – Gary Rudoren

Dates: July 5 – July 14
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Class size: 10 – 15
Cost: $202 for Members*/$225 for non-Members*

The fundamentals of improvisation are the fundamentals of life. Listening, agreeing, forwarding action, taking care of your partner and so much more! You’ll be introduced to those lessons as you play games as well as create characters and scenes using a variety of improv and creativity exercises. The goal is to have a group performance at the end of our 8 week session. Number one rule is to have fun!

Filmmaking Bootcamp – Evan Dickerson

Dates: July 17 – July 28
Time: 2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Class size: 8 – 12
Cost: $337 for Members*/$375 for non-Members*

In this hands-on workshop, students will learn the art of filmmaking from script to screen. Students will work together as a film crew to generate ideas, work with actors, master camera, lighting, and sound techniques, as well as learn the basics of editing. All of this will result in the production of our very own short film! No prior filmmaking experience is required!

Filmmaking Bootcamp and Film Studies – Pamm Malveaux

Dates: July 31 – August 11
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

In this hands-on workshop, students will learn the art of filmmaking from script to screen. Students will work together as a film crew to generate ideas, work with actors, master camera, lighting, and sound techniques, as well as learn the basics of editing. All of this will result in the production of our very own short film! Students will also spend their lunch break watching and discussing a collection of classic films in our in-house cinema. No prior filmmaking experience is required!

Editing with Premier Pro – John Carluccio

Dates: August 21 – August 25

Learn to edit your video footage like a professional. This hands-on beginner workshop will cover the interface, controls, and features of the industry-standard software Adobe Premiere Pro. Students will work with a wide range of professional footage to learn what it takes to bring a project through to the final cut!

Looking to bring your films to the next level? In this accelerated workshop, students will learn the art of cinematography in order to give your films a sleek and professional look. Students will discover how to use the camera to tell their stories, along with the technical know-how to get their films shot. From lighting to lenses, this hands-on workshop will provide the knowledge and techniques aspiring filmmakers need to improve their craft.

Got some funny ideas? Whether they’re just in your head or on paper, now’s the time to let them out and make them real. In this writing class for high school students, learn the fundamentals of comedy sketches – creating characters, exploring scene work and structure. Learn some tips, hints and get feedback on how to create comedy pieces like you see on Saturday Night Live, Key & Peele, Amy Schumer and so much more. You’ll work on sketches, monologues and short film ideas to build up a portfolio of ideas… and have fun doing it.

Improv II is for the improviser who is ready to take their work to the next level. We will continue to fine-tune various improv techniques such as character, agreement, listening, physicality, emotion, heightening, and object and environment work. We will apply these skills to improvised scene work and short-form games. The students will also learn improv show hosting skills. The two-week course will culminate in an end of session showcase for friends and family.

In this beginner screenwriting workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of screenwriting from format, to techniques, to story structure. Students will analyze the work of successfully produced screenplays to learn what it takes to write for film and television, as well as receive valuable feedback from their peers and their instructor as they create their own original short, feature, or television scripts! No previous screenwriting experience is required. Students will be expected to write a large portion of their script outside of class.

For young screenwriters looking to improve their craft, this writing workshop will help make their scripts stand out. Students will dig deeply into story analysis and character development while creating their own original short, feature or television scripts. While inside our “writer’s room” environment, students will be able to give and receive invaluable feedback on their stories from experienced, and like-minded writers. Basic screenwriting knowledge is required, and students will be expected to write a large portion of their script outside of class.

Reel World Filmmaking – Charles Poekel

In this one-of-a-kind class, students will have the opportunity to gain real world experience by creating a promotional video for the Montclair Community Farm Coalition. Students will be guided through every phase of a professional production from development, pre-production, shooting, editing, and the final delivery. Though students will be led by an experienced industry professional, they will be expected to have basic camera and editing knowledge. Build your portfolio, have fun, and create a lasting product for positive social change! (Grades 10 – 12)

Have experience making films? Looking to take the next step to improve your craft? In this hands-on workshop, aspiring filmmakers will learn how to bring their projects to the next level. Students will learn elements of film, editing, and cinematographic theory used by master filmmakers to set their films apart. Students will also learn how to effectively and efficiently plan and produce their films by generating an original short film.
